In his State of the City Address, Lansing Mayor Andy Schor emphasized the city’s resilience and growth while highlighting its efforts in housing, public safety, development, and helping people.
The Mayor’s top priority is ensuring a safe community, emphasizing the community’s law enforcement efforts. He noted a decrease in overall crime rates and shared initiatives such as Lansing’s violent crime initiative, which has successfully removed illegal weapons from the streets. Mayor Schor additionally highlighted non-police initiatives aimed at reducing gun violence, such as the Advance Peace initiative, which focuses on breaking the cycle of retaliatory violence through community engagement and support programs.
Mayor Schor attributes much of the city’s progress to federal investments delivered by President Biden’s Administration, mainly through initiatives such as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Inflation Reduction Act, and the American Rescue Plan Act. These investments have provided critical funding for infrastructure projects, job creation, and community development throughout Lansing.
The Mayor discussed the Lansing Equitable Economic Development Initiative and the Empower Program, which supports economic growth while empowering entrepreneurs from BIPOC communities. These programs ensure that economic opportunities are accessible to all residents, fostering inclusive growth and prosperity.
