Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla delivered his State of the City Address at the Mile Square Theatre, focusing on housing and environmental justice, Hoboken’s ongoing resiliency efforts, and renewed efforts to allow seniors to age in place.
Mayor Bhalla emphasized the importance of housing as a human right and unveiled a major redevelopment plan for the Hoboken Housing Authority (HHA). The plan aims to rehabilitate or replace all existing housing units within the HHA campus, providing quality, renovated homes without causing displacement. The project includes infrastructure upgrades, a new commercial corridor, and a resiliency park to mitigate flooding.
Recognizing the importance of supporting the senior population, Mayor Bhalla announced plans to create more affordable housing for seniors at 11th and Willow, representing the first new affordable housing complex in over 30 years. He highlighted recent redevelopment agreements to increase affordable housing stock, including a project near Hoboken Terminal with a 20% affordable housing set aside.
Mayor Bhalla underscored the city’s efforts to address climate change and environmental justice, citing resiliency projects such as Harborside Park and ResilienCity Park. He emphasized the city’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050 through initiatives such as the Hoboken Community Solar Program and on-street EV charging stations. Additionally, Vision Zero initiatives aim to enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety through projects such as the Sinatra Drive redesign and improvements along Willow Avenue.
