  • Statement from the Democratic Mayors Association on Federal Agent Violence and ICE Funding

    Jan 26, 2026

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Democratic Mayors Association released the following statement:

“The recent actions taken by federal agents in Minneapolis and other cities across the country under the auspices of “public safety” are appalling. They are trampling basic civil liberties, have wreaked havoc and fear in our communities, and resulted in the death of innocent civilians.

We call for an immediate stop to this lawlessness by ICE and federal agents deployed by the Department of Homeland Security to our cities. Enough is enough.

No one is above the law. Civil liberty protections and constitutional rights must be respected, and directives must be issued immediately demanding this by all federal agents. Those whose actions have trampled these protections and committed crimes must be held accountable – from Secretary Noem to the agents on the ground.

We commend Senate Minority Leader Schumer in demanding that no funding be provided to ICE while considering federal appropriations. Further, we encourage legal constraints be placed on ICE with an end to impunity, strong civil liberties protections be enforced, and expanded training requirements be put in place.

For decades, local and federal officials have effectively worked together in partnership to keep our cities safe until President Trump upended these efforts with his federal overreach and political gamesmanship. Our federal government must respect local autonomy and work with our cities, not against them.”
