Democratic Mayors Association Statement on President Biden’s State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democratic Mayors Association (DMA) President Mayor Kate Gallego released the following statement in response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union Address:

“Tonight, I join my fellow Democratic Mayors in applauding President Joe Biden’s State of the Union Address, which underscored his continued commitment to creating a better future for all Americans. I know I speak for many mayors when I say I’m grateful to have a true partner in the President; I say loudly and often that his Investing in America agenda has empowered cities to make historic strides.

In his speech, President Biden highlighted how he has moved our economy forward. Phoenix is a shining example of that: we have ushered in more high-wage jobs than ever before thanks to the support of the President. Once an economy that primarily relied on lower wage, seasonal industries, Phoenix is transforming into the semiconductor manufacturing capital of the world. Instead of off-shoring these critical jobs to Asia, companies are flocking to Phoenix—and they are staying in Phoenix. The President’s CHIPS and Science Act is spurring that movement, which in turn is lifting families into the middle class. President Biden’s vision for our country is turning into reality in Phoenix.

Beyond helping Phoenix become a world leader in manufacturing, President Biden's landmark laws are accelerating efforts to build more resilient cities and confront climate change. With new tools from Direct Pay to solar incentives to additional water conservation funding, cities across the country are taking matters into their own hands and making tangible differences in the lives of their citizens—providing them with cleaner air, cheaper utility bills, and more transportation options. I do not exaggerate when I say how game changing this has been for us mayors. In Phoenix, the record levels of federal investment have enabled us to build and open a light rail extension, kickstart a semiconductor technician apprenticeship program, create and fill great jobs, improve our flourishing airport, and much more.

While we celebrate these successes, we also know there is a lot of progress to make. Together, I know we can act on our shared commitments to combat gun violence, protect reproductive rights, and strengthen our democracy. As the President emphasized again this evening, hope is our most powerful tool, and if we work united, we can deliver results for every American.”
