Mayor Kathy Sheehan – Albany NY

Mayor Kathy Sheehan is in her third term as Albany, New York’s 75th Mayor. Mayor Sheehan has dedicated her administration to creating a city of opportunity, leading with a commitment to equity and responsive government that includes diverse community voices.

Under Mayor Sheehan’s leadership, Albany has taken bold steps to modernize city government and improve quality of life for residents. Her administration adopted the city’s first new zoning code in more than half a century, established an Innovation Office, and implemented cost-saving measures that improved Albany’s bond rating while holding the line on taxes. She has invested in new IT systems, secured millions in workforce development funding, and obtained unprecedented state aid to strengthen city services.

Mayor Sheehan has driven progress in neighborhoods across Albany. Her administration launched a $1 million vacant building rehabilitation program, a $1.5 million poverty reduction initiative, and multiple traffic-calming projects to make streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists. She has championed the revitalization of downtown, renovated more than a dozen parks, and revamped the award-winning Summer Youth Employment Program to better connect young people with meaningful opportunities.

Before being elected Mayor, she served as Albany’s Treasurer, where she modernized fiscal policies and overhauled the city’s parking ticket system. Earlier in her career, she worked in the private sector as vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary for a publicly traded medical device manufacturer.

Mayor Sheehan earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Bowling Green State University. After several years working in communications, she attended Albany Law School on an academic scholarship, graduating magna cum laude.
