Washington, D.C. – Andy Thomson won election to the Boca Raton Mayor’s Office, becoming the first Democrat to do so in more than 30 years. Thomson told the University Press at his campaign kick-off party in November that even as an elected mayor, he would continue teaching as a political science professor at Florida Atlantic.
It has been over 30 years since Boca Raton elected a Democratic mayor, until Thomson became the 2026 mayor-elect. The last Democrat affiliate elected was Bill Smith Jr. in 1993, who is now a lawyer in civil practice, wills, and trusts in Boca Raton.
On March 31, Thomson will be sworn in as the mayor of Boca Raton.
