Democratic Mayors Association Statement on President Trump’s Joint Address to Congress
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democratic Mayors Association (DMA) President Mayor Justin M. Bibb issued the following statement after President Donald Trump’s joint address to Congress:
“Tonight’s speech was more of the same—chaos, broken promises, and policies that leave working families behind. Instead of offering real solutions, President Trump is pushing deep cuts to health care, housing, and food assistance while handing out tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy. His failed economic agenda is driving up costs, making it harder for families to get ahead.
Slashing Medicaid by nearly $1 trillion would strip life-saving care from millions. Cutting food assistance programs like SNAP will leave families struggling to put food on the table. Gutting affordable housing support will force more people into homelessness. And his reckless tariffs are making everyday essentials like gas and groceries even more expensive.
But in our cities, we’re building a different future. While Trump and Republicans sow division and dysfunction, Democratic mayors are leading with action. We’re creating jobs, investing in communities, and expanding opportunity. We’re protecting essential programs, making our neighborhoods safer, and ensuring every family has a fair shot at success.
Cities are the engine of America’s future. We’re proving that progress is possible, and we won’t stop fighting for a nation where everyone can thrive.”
