Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith delivered her State of the City Address in a new format, transforming her traditional remarks into a community-centered conversation that brought residents, city leaders, and local partners together to answer the questions that matter most. Her address was built around questions submitted by residents, covering topics including public safety, infrastructure, housing, economic development, and family stability.
Mayor Smith highlighted measurable progress made in public safety since 2022, noting that total crime is down nearly 36%, property crime is down more than 30%, and violent crime is down more than 16%. The conversation expanded the definition of safety beyond emergency response, highlighting how investments in street design, technology, community policing, and prevention programs all contribute to safer neighborhoods. The Mayor directly addressed questions surrounding water capacity and economic development, particularly following the announcement of a major data center project. Her administration emphasized that Lima’s water system is not only highly regulated for safety, but also a key competitive advantage in attracting economic investment, while maintaining service reliability for residents.
Housing emerged as a central theme, with city officials and development partners acknowledging both progress and ongoing challenges. The discussion focused on increasing housing supply across multiple price points, making development more feasible, supporting neighborhood revitalization through coordinated public-private investment, and creating pathways from renting to homeownership. The program also explored how economic development translates into real opportunities for residents, highlighting small-business growth, workforce pathways, and the importance of family support systems.
