Democratic Mayors Association Blasts Trump for Holding Up Housing Bill, Failing to Do Anything to Address Housing Costs
WASHINGTON—Today, just one day after the House and Senate passed a historic housing bill with massive bipartisan support, President Donald Trump cancelled the signing ceremony. Trump is now refusing to sign the 21st Century Road to Housing Act unless Congress also passes the Save America Act, his pet project that would crush voting rights under the guise of “preventing election fraud.” In reaction to the news, the Democratic Mayors Association offered the following statement.
“This is just the latest example of President Trump placing himself and his own petty grievances over the needs of the American people. In every corner of the country, housing is increasingly out of reach for middle and working class families. The 21st Century Road to Housing Act should have been a promising first step for Congress to begin to tackle the housing crisis, a crisis that America’s Mayors have been addressing daily – now it is just another broken promise.”
“Trump vowed lower costs on Day One, and promised to bring down housing costs, saying it was “a ticket to the American dream.” Instead, costs have only skyrocketed under his watch, and now he is holding the American dream hostage to push an unpopular, anti-democratic bill that nobody wants. Trump is making life harder for working families and leaving local leaders out to dry, all while threatening to undermine our democracy. The cruelty knows no bounds.”
“Housing is a crisis that requires a whole of government response – federal, state and local. America’s mayors need real solutions and real partnership from Washington to address people’s most pressing needs. Trump may have made his priorities clear, but Democratic Mayors will never stop fighting to protect their residents and deliver for their communities.”
