Democratic Mayors Association Statement on President Biden’s Farewell Address

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Democratic Mayors Association issued the following statement after President Biden delivered his farewell address this evening:

“Tonight, Democratic Mayors nationwide join together to express our profound gratitude to President Joe Biden for his unwavering commitment to our country and unparalleled leadership, service, and partnership with America’s mayors. His presidency has left an enduring mark on our cities and paved the way for a stronger, more equitable future.

From day one, President Biden has been a steadfast ally to mayors and cities, delivering unprecedented investments directly to local governments that have strengthened our communities in ways we could never imagine. At the height of the pandemic, President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris promised to help our communities recover and delivered with the passage of the American Rescue Plan Act, which served as a lifeline to our communities. These efforts empowered Mayors with the tools to tackle their cities’ most pressing challenges head-on and build more resilient communities.

Under President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda, landmark legislation such as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Inflation Reduction Act, and the CHIPS and Science Act has not only helped boost our nation’s economy but breathed new life into towns and cities often left behind, ensuring everyone has a fair shot to succeed. These transformative measures and others have driven job creation, advanced critical infrastructure projects, improved public safety, expanded health care, supported veterans, tackled the housing crisis, safeguarded civil liberties, and combatted climate change.

We are also deeply grateful for President Biden’s inclusion of mayors in his Administration. The Biden-Harris Administration included a historic number of former mayors, including four cabinet secretaries, three ambassadors, and numerous White House advisors, who brought their mayoral experience to the national and international stage.

As his presidency concludes, we thank President Biden, Vice President Harris, and the Administration for their continued dedication to empowering cities and improving the lives of everyday families and workers. Their lasting legacy of hope, resilience, and progress will continue to inspire us as we continue to do the important work to build a better America for all.”
