Democratic Mayors Association Supports Bipartisan Debt Limit Agreement
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Democratic Mayors Association (DMA) President Mayor Levar M. Stoney issued the following statement in response to the bipartisan debt limit agreement reached over the weekend:
“We commend the Biden-Harris Administration’s relentless efforts to reach a bipartisan debt limit agreement to prevent our nation from enduring a catastrophic default. For months, President Biden has echoed the importance of Congress paying our bills and the economic dangers at risk if we default. Despite efforts by the House Freedom Caucus to hold the economy and the livelihoods of Americans hostage, President Biden delivered once again this weekend and made it known that failure was not an option for the American people.
The Biden-Harris Administration delivered a responsible, bipartisan agreement that will protect our nation’s historic legislative investments, economic gains, low unemployment rates, and health care while blocking excessive cuts to law enforcement, public safety, and education. It also safeguards critical pieces of federal legislation that cities depend on, such as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act.
Democratic Mayors urge Congress to pass this bill without delay so President Biden can sign it into law and continue to build on the historic economic progress our nation has achieved over the past two years.”
