National Conference of Democratic Mayors Elects New Leadership

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti to serve 2-year term as President

Washington, D.C. - The National Conference of Democratic Mayors elected Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti as their new President, along with Vice Presidents Mayor Nan Whaley (Dayton, OH), Mayor Christopher Cabaldon (West Sacramento, CA), Mayor Michael B. Hancock (Denver, CO) and Mayor Steve Adler (Austin, TX). Mayor Muriel Bowser (Washington, DC) was elected Secretary and Mayor Levar Stoney (Richmond, VA) will join the Conference's leadership for the first time as Treasurer.

"I am honored and humbled to be elected President of the Democratic Mayors. Washington may be broken, but America is not. As mayors, we see up close how in their cities and towns the American people continue to innovate, work and create national change from the ground up," Mayor Garcetti said. "We will amplify the Democratic voice in local politics and amplify the local voice in Democratic politics to win the national election. I'm excited to continue to work with outgoing President Mayor Michael Hancock and the rest of our tremendous board to win Democratic victories across America."

"When I was elected to serve as President of the Democratic Mayors in 2018, I told my colleagues it was on us to lead where Washington wouldn't," Mayor Hancock said. "Every day since then, I've watched Democratic Mayors step up and move their cities forward. As I pass the torch to my friend Mayor Garcetti and shift to my new role as Vice President, I'm eager to help build on this momentum and ensure we deliver in 2020."

As Democratic Mayors President, Mayor Garcetti will lead a network of more than 500 Democratic Mayors and put forth an agenda to improve the lives of all Americans by focusing on the most urgent challenges facing our nation's cities and towns, including homelessness, climate change, affordable housing, gun violence, economic inequality, creating community wealth, immigration and health care.

In his initial remarks to the Conference as President, Mayor Garcetti outlined plans to directly engage in the election of a Democratic president, with a specific focus on the key states of Arizona, Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin; to elect more mayors as delegates to the national and state Democratic parties; to elect Democratic mayors; and to support Democratic mayors with messaging and social media content.

Mayor Garcetti will serve a 2-year term as President concluding in January 2022.
