AZ Big Media: EV Roadmap aims to put 280,000 electric vehicles on Phoenix streets

Mayor Kate Gallego and the City Council unanimously approved the Transportation Electrification Action Plan, more commonly referred to as the “EV Roadmap.” It charts an aggressive path toward 280,000 electric vehicles on Phoenix streets by 2030. Councilwoman Yassamin Ansari served as chair of the Mayor’s Electric Vehicle Ad Hoc Committee, leading the committee in over 30 public hearings citywide. The Roadmap informs on accelerating a transition to EVs, and includes guiding principles and equity among its foundation.

“The future of mobility is happening now in Phoenix, and we are investing to be top-in-the-nation for a concentration of manufacturers and parts providers that will create quality jobs for our residents,” said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “As the federal government makes significant investments in EV infrastructure, this action positions Phoenix to be prepared to respond and continue to lead the growth of this industry.”

The EV Roadmap includes strategies to increase accessibility and affordability of electric vehicle ownership, invest in necessary public EV charger installations, and convert a portion of the city’s light duty fleet to EV.

“An electric transition is essential to combat rising greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution in our city,” said Councilwoman Yassamin Ansari. “Investing now, with equity at the forefront, will ensure that we maintain our city’s reputation as a climate leader both locally and globally.”

Widespread EV adoption will lead to an increase in green jobs, new education, and business opportunities. Phoenix is home to EV manufacturers Nikola, Carlisle Industries, and Cruise (a subsidiary of General Motors). The industry will be reliant on next generation microchips, including those manufactured at TSMC, the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturer building its North American 5 nanometer manufacturing facility in the City of Phoenix.

The rapid pace of EV adoption will drive education initiatives, as we train young people for these jobs of the future. “Since the day I was elected, I’ve emphasized innovation in Phoenix,” stated Mayor Gallego. “The Transportation Electrification Plan is innovation in action.”
