Idaho Business Review: Boise plugs in two facilities to clean energy program

The Boise City Council has approved the addition of two government operations to a clean energy program, bringing the city closer to its goal of going green.

At its meeting this week, the city council approved Boise’s participation in the Clean Energy Your Way program. The Boise Airport and the Lander Street Water Renewal Facility will both transition to the program.

The city stated that the move brings it 26% closer to meeting its 2030 goal of using clean electricity across all municipal operations.

“This is possible because Boiseans have been so clear that they expect our city to lead in protecting the environment for the future,” said Boise Mayor Lauren McLean in a statement. “It is important that we are resilient and because we want our kids, and their kids, to be healthy and to have a place where they can live and thrive into the future.”

Clean Energy Your Way is a collaborative program between the city, Idaho Power and Micron Technology. Customers of Idaho Power will also be able to participate in the program, helping to further reduce emissions.

“The city has specific goals related to emissions and they view the energy sector as an important part of achieving that goal,” said Adam Richins, chief operating officer for Idaho Power. “The beauty of this project is it is a partnership ― the city receives clean energy at a reasonable price and Idaho Power is able to incorporate that clean energy into a reliable system.”

Once the agreement is finalized between the city and power agency, it will be filed with the Idaho Public Utilities Commission for formal approval, the city stated.
