Democratic Mayors Association Commends the Passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Democratic Mayors Association (DMA) Board President Mayor Levar M. Stoney issued the following statement in response to the passage of a bipartisan gun safety bill in Congress:
“We commend the coalition of federal leaders who have joined together to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act to help our nation advance common sense gun reform. This bipartisan bill signals the breakthrough our country has been demanding, and we hope our federal leaders will maintain the momentum and continue to meet this moment with real change.
As Mayors, we see firsthand the pain and suffering our communities experience at the hands of gun violence and know the significance of the actions proposed in the bill. This need for action has only been magnified by the Supreme Court’s ruling just yesterday to expand gun rights and nullify strong concealed-carry licensing laws, actions which underscore the importance of this fight. While there is still much work to be accomplished on gun violence, the bill represents a critical step federal leaders can take to make our cities and communities safer.”
