Democratic Mayors Association Statement on the 157th Juneteenth Celebration
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Democratic Mayors Association (DMA) President Mayor Levar M. Stoney issued the following statement in commemoration of the 157th Juneteenth anniversary:
“Today, the Democratic Mayors Association commemorates the 157th anniversary of Juneteenth, celebrating the end of slavery and the emancipation of Black Americans nationwide. The legacy of Juneteenth marks a pivotal moment in our nation’s history and is a time to reflect on the progress our country has made and the work that remains to be done in ensuring justice and equality for all. This Juneteenth, we celebrate the resiliency and strength of Black Americans and their profound contributions to our cities and towns across the nation. We also pause to remember the pain and hardships of Black Americans past and present in the fight for freedom and civil liberties. As Mayors, we will continue to put equity at the forefront of our work and reaffirm our efforts to combat the longstanding impacts of racial injustices on our communities.”
