Democratic Mayors Condemn Trump’s Elimination of the Department of Education

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democratic Mayors Association (DMA) President, Mayor Justin M. Bibb, issued the following statement in response to President Donald Trump’s Executive Order attempting to eliminate the Department of Education:

“Donald Trump promised to improve America’s education system—but today, he is dismantling it. His attempt to eliminate the Department of Education is reckless and unlawful, threatening billions in funding for K-12 schools, Pell Grants, and student loan programs while stripping civil rights protections for students with disabilities and communities of color. The loss of Title I funding will devastate low-income school districts, widening educational inequality and leaving millions of students behind.

While Trump turns his back on students, Democratic mayors stand firm in defending education as the foundation of opportunity. We call on Americans to join us in protecting public education and ensuring every student has access to quality schools, equal opportunities, and the resources needed to succeed—this fight is not over.”
