Democratic Mayors Vice Presidents Meet with President Biden to Share Support for Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework
Mayors Nan Whaley, Michael B. Hancock, and Kate Gallego joined a bipartisan coalition of mayors and governors to advocate for federal investments in infrastructure
Washington, D.C. - Three officers of the Democratic Mayors Board met with President Biden at the White House yesterday afternoon to discuss their support for the Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework and the urgent need for bold federal investment at the local level.
Democratic Mayors Vice Presidents Mayor Nan Whaley (Dayton, OH), Mayor Michael B. Hancock (Denver, CO), and Mayor Kate Gallego (Phoenix, AZ) were part of a bipartisan coalition of mayors and governors invited to share their thoughts on the infrastructure package, which represents the largest long-term investment in the nation’s infrastructure and competitiveness in nearly a century.
"For years, mayors have been calling for an infrastructure package that will help us rebuild our communities and compete in the 21st century. With the Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework, we finally have the opportunity to make these investments a reality," said Mayor Whaley, who also serves as President of the United States Conference of Mayors. "Mayors are ready to do whatever it takes because our communities can't wait."
Mayors know firsthand what is needed to grow the economy, create jobs, improve living standards, combat climate change, and ensure equity in their cities – but they cannot do it alone.
The proposed package would empower local leaders to make historic and transformational investments in transportation, roads, housing, water and wastewater, broadband, clean energy, and more.
“I strongly support the Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework. For decades, Arizona and the nation have seen firsthand the consequences of massive underinvestment – longer commute times, extreme weather events, and increased home energy costs,” said Mayor Gallego. “This is a once in a generation opportunity to make bold investments that can change the future of our communities, and we’re ready to get it done."
The mayors urged Congress to swiftly pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework.
“Infrastructure creates jobs, supports communities, and grows the middle class. To ensure we build back better and sustain this recovery, we need the level of investment President Biden and members of Congress are proposing with the Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework,” said Mayor Hancock. “Thank you to President Biden for inviting mayors and governors to the White House yesterday to underscore how important this framework is for our recovery. Congress must push through the gridlock, pass this plan and get this done for the American people.”
