Democratic Mayors Association Statement on the Mass Shootings in Buffalo and Milwaukee

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Democratic Mayors Association (DMA) Board President Mayor Levar Stoney issued the following statement in response to the mass shootings in Buffalo and Milwaukee this weekend:

“The Democratic Mayors Association is saddened by the senseless acts of gun violence in Buffalo and Milwaukee this weekend. Our hearts go out to all impacted by these horrific tragedies, and we stand in solidarity with Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown and Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson during these difficult times.

As local officials, we can no longer afford to sit still as mass shootings and violent acts of white supremacy continue to plague our communities. Hate like this has no place in our cities, and our communities deserve better.

We must work together to pass comprehensive gun reform – including taking immediate actions to stop the flow of guns being used in violent crimes and continuing to strengthen partnerships with law enforcement to make our communities safer. We must also tackle crime at its root by investing in community intervention and prevention programs and expanding economic and educational opportunities for youth. Lastly, we must elect local and state leaders who support responsible gun ownership and reform.”
