Democratic Mayors Association Praises President Biden’s Student Loan Debt Relief Plan
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Democratic Mayors Association (DMA) President Mayor Levar M. Stoney issued the following statement in response to President Joe Biden’s student loan debt relief plan:
“President Joe Biden promised to deliver much-needed breathing room to borrowers and, once again, he has fulfilled his promise to help millions of working and middle-class families. Today’s announcement is a significant win for the American people and it will lift a heavy burden off the shoulders of Pell grant recipients and millions of other borrowers eligible for debt cancellation. This decision will not only provide immediate relief to families struggling with everyday costs but it will open the door for more Americans to buy homes, start small businesses, or even save for retirement.
As we all know too well, student loan debt has impacted the economic mobility of millions of Americans, particularly Black, Latino, and first-generation students who are disproportionately impacted by debt. The actions President Biden has taken today will help narrow the racial wealth gap and finally bring racial and economic justice to communities of color. We applaud the Biden-Harris Administration for leading these life-changing efforts and putting American families first.”
